Looking after your canvas can often be overlooked or difficult depending on where you store your boat.

Here are a couple of quick ideas to help keep you canvas looking and working well.

Spray zips regularly with Silicone spray, this will wash off over time so you should consider doing this after each trip.

Spray your frame with Silicone spray and wipe down with soft cloth.

Keep canvas clean and wash with a soft brush and mild detergent, (preferably made for purpose). Clean off bird droppings and stains.

Get a good UV protective spray and use every 2-3 months to keep your canvas supple.

You can use silicone spray or Vaseline on your snap fasteners.

We know to clean and rinse our boats after each trip, but our trailers are often overlooked, here are some quick tips to keep your trailer in top condition.

- Check your tyre pressures each trip
- Check your wheel nuts periodically
- Hose down the frame after each trip
- Paying close attention to rollers, springs and axles
- Periodically check brake pads (if fitted) and adjust
- Check your lights and connections each trip
- Visually check bolts and frame for wear and tear
- Rollers, grease points, winch and axles should be greased twice a year


If travelling a long distance let the wheel bearings cool before putting into the water, this helps stop water getting past the bearing seals.

What life jacket you are required to have can be confusing, it all depends on your boat and the type of water you are boating on.

As a general rule it is broken down into 3 types:
- Smooth waters (Min Level 50 - AS 4758)
- Partially smooth waters (Min Level 50 - AS 4758)
- Beyond partially smooth waters (Min Level 100 - AS 4758)

By law skippers must inform each person on board where the life jackets are stowed and they must be clearly identified.

Life Jackets must comply to Australian Standards (AS 4758)

Depending on the type of waters you will be most commonly be on, you should choose carefully. You can use the more heavy duty life jackets in smooth waters but not the other way around.

Consider Jackets that are classed "Level 100" or higher if going into open waters at some point.

"Level 50" for smooth and partially smooth waters only.

Here are some simple steps to help keep your boat and motor ready for your next outing.
After Each Trip
- Flush your motor
- Wash off salt on the boat
- Check bungs and look for any blockage

Each Month
If you take out your boat regularly, or its exposed to the elements, give it a bath each month with warm soapy water to keep your hull, motor and upholstery free of salt build up and help with minimising corrosion. A good boat wash is advised as some detergents can increase the risk of corrosion.

Run your motor regularly, do not let it sit for months at a time without being started and run

Once a Year
Wax and Polish to help stop paint fade and keep your boat looking good.

Servicing
Regular servicing is critical to ensure your motor stays in good condition and will last you. The sacrificial anode will need to be checked and replaced if necessary along with other wearing parts.
